First of all, thanks to Maureen and Fran for a wonderful Christmas dinner. Thanks to Patsy too. It was a nice day, even though I was late....so what's new? I just finished the Irish bread; it lasted longer than anyone would think.
I'm spending money like a drunken sailor, but on different things from what he'd spend money on. I have a new DVD recorder to transfer video tapes to disc. Why? Because it was on sale.
I've also joined Netflix; cheaper than a video store, but do I really watch that many movies? I'm on the free trial membership for now. I figure I'll try it for at least a month after that.
Little more than a week till the big trip.

It's festive!
My new Christmas tree looks great. It's different, that's for sure. If I can remember how to post a picture here, I will.

It's cold!
Back from Florida! Just a quick long weekend with the family, dinner with Jo-Ann and Steve at Grill's. If you ever get to the east coast of Florida, go to Port Canaveral and eat at Grill's. It's the best! Ate at the Lobster Shanty, Red Lobster, Sunrise Grill, and And All That Jazz Cafe. All good. But Grill's is the best; did I mention that?
Early mornings in Florida were chilly, but this week it's going to be in the teens here in RI. Too cold.
My computer is back, and working well. My TV came back last week....we'll see. There may still be problems.

Cat Country, the Next Generation
If you listen to Cat Country 98.1, you may like to know that Chris Whitten and his wife are now the parents of an 8 pound, 12 oz baby boy they've named Dominic.
I've bought some Radio Shack wireless headphones for work. They're a little bulkier than the ones I prefer, but no wire is a big benefit. Highly recommended at 19.99!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Quiet on the roads this morning; no surprise there. Reporting for WPRO all morning. I think it's fantastic that at least one local station is "live and local" this morning. I hate hearing just network programming or "best of " shows on a holiday. In spite of that, traffic reports are not necessary. It's purely an image thing for the radio and tv stations that include traffic...and, of course, it's free for them and Metro! (yeah, the comp day thing...)

Web site
Lots of folks are upset about the abrupt firing of Cruisin Bruce Palmer from B101. Bruce has set up a web site so we can follow his every move as he looks for his next situation. He's a great guy, one of the most talented in all New England. Check out www. cruisinbruce.com
I'll be on WPRO AM Thanksgiving morning with traffic, then off to Taunton for dinner. At least I don't have to work the afternoon; and according to Mike Panarello, we get a comp day for working each holiday. We'll see.

Old?
I figure 40, 1,2,3 is all early forties. 44,5,6 is mid forties. I am now in my late forties! And making a ton less money than I did 10 years ago. Oh well; I still manage to fall out of bed every morning.
Lunch today with CruisinBruce at his estate.

I had a great lunch yesterday with Dave Richards. We ate at Chan's; beef and peapods, delicious. We talked about analog vs. digital, plus a few other interesting rumors. We'll see.
Still no word from Elwin.

By popular demand
Folks are desperate for more information on my life...all right, Joannie was wondering why I haven't been posting much. I'm sending back my computer for work on the screen....now I'll find out how good Averatec service really is. Still no widescreen TV; Elwin is still working on it. Why do I continue to go broke buying things that don't work?
Harry and Flo and I had lunch at Cherrystone's last week. It was really a good day. Going to lunch with Dave Richards this week, and I hope with Bruce next week.
I'm not happy about the changes at The Screen Savers on G4TechTv; but then I really haven't been watching much anyway.
Stargate SG1 Convention in Boston in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's cold
Just for the record, temp this morning is in the mid 20's! But at least it's dry, so no frost on the car.
Harry and Flo are in RI, but I haven't heard from them since Saturday. I hope they call; I'd like to take them to lunch and show them the estate.
Hamblett's last day is Friday.
My TV is still not back.

Kerry loses, TV's not back, blah, blah, blah
So, the election is over. I have to say that, because there was little doubt of a Kerry victory in RI, there were few, if any, ads run on TV or radio. No general officers up for election either, so it really wasn't that painful a season.
Still waiting for my TV to be repaired; Elwin had to order the part. From the Moon?
Harry and Flo come to the Ocean State for a visit on Saturday. I hope they have a good time. At least I'll get to see them, unlike April and Brad, who never call or write....even when they're in RI.

It's been a while
I haven't felt like writing for a while; I still don't.
But here's what's been going on.....
Elwin has my TV in the shop for repair. I miss it; partially because I can't get the List or Guide features to work on my old TV.
I went to the Swing FM party on Saturday. It was fun.
And the big news is that I'm going to Arizona for a few days in January. I never wanted to see the southwest before, but for some reason, I feel it's something I really have to do.

Another week coming to a close
Yesterday was pretty good; I had lunch with the folks from Cat Country...Tad, Chris and Rick. .
I also took care of some bank business and we ate at Bickford's last night.
Tonight we go to The Producers at PPAC.
Now the bad news...my car has been at Puritan all week. They couldn't figure out the problem at first, then it just took a while to get the work done. Top, windows and seat belt all needed work. We'll see when I get it back. It's actually ok; I'm driving good 4 door Cruiser.

Cape Cod
We went to the Cape over the weekend and ate. Check out the Cape Cod Irish Village package plan; it's pretty good, especially if you like a big Irish breakfast. Also, of course, two meals at Seafood Sam's and one at the Lobster Hut in Plymouth. Both are tied for the world's greatest clam strips!
I spent some money, but nothing outrageous. The biggest thing to come out of the trip is that I couldn't get the top up on the car Saturday. I take it to the dealership today.

A weekend approaches
We ate last night at Panera Bread in Cranston. Good soup and the sandwiches look good as well. I'll be going back there.
The DVR is working out very well. I have a lot of movies and shows scheduled to be recorded. Unfortunately, David Jones is mad at me; I deleted Jay Leno's reference to the Toasted Lab. I'm not sure how or why, but it's gone. Sorry again, David.

I blame the band
We were all set to go to a Shenanigans reuinion on Sunday. The band Shananagans was playing and it was a benefit for Gavin Fitzgerald who suffered a stroke last year. We found out about it from Tom Kennedy....unfortunately, he had the date wrong! The party was on Saturday!
Instead, we went to the beach and had a good lunch at George's and a nice trip back on Route 1A and Route 1.
Cable guy comes today to install HD and DVR. I hope it works. So little does.

I made it to another milestone.....
Today is my 22nd anniversary as a traffic reporter. Almost half my life. I'm wearing a black armband.
It was 22 years ago that I called up my mother at work and told her I got her a present for her birthday on the 19th....I told her I got a job. When she learned it would be driving in rush hour traffic for 4 dollars an hour, she told me to take the bartender job I'd been offered. But things worked out OK, except for the fact that 22 years later I'm not making much more money and I still don't know how to make a good drink.
Off to meet with Steve today to see how things are going and to get some questions answered.
I ordered digital cable plus HD plus DVR yesterday. The installer comes on Monday.

Lunch on Route 44
I had lunch today with Bruce Palmer at Papa Gino's in Smithfield. Great penne with chicken and broccolli in alfredo sauce.
Bruce returned my David Frye album...Radio Free Nixon. It's a fantastic record and I look forward to hearing it again. He did not bring back Victor Buono!
I also got the car serviced, took my new suit to be altered, got a price list from Cox Cable and washed the car too.
I don't usually do that much in a month.

Another week, another problem
First, the good news....Maureen, Fran, Patsy and Mrs. Tierney came by Saturday and we ate the food I cooked. No one got sick as far as I know.
Sunday, it was breakfast at the Farm, lunch at Reidy's in Portsmouth, dinner at Ward's.
Then home, where I seem to have broken my leather recliner. The left arm has come loose. I put in a call to Dr. Jim to take a look.
Today, I bought a Canon printer. When I get it connected, I'll have more to say.....and I hope it's good.

More fun
I had my semi annual visit with Dr. Behar and the nurses on the ninth floor this morning. It went ok, as far as I know. Not remembering much is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Geoff for getting me there and to TC for getting me back to work. It was 1:30 when I got back to the office, so I didn't bother going home; I fell asleep for a half hour or so at my desk. Drugs will make you do that.
Maureen and Fran and Patsy, along with Mrs. Tierney are stopping by tomorrow. It should be fun.

Timmy's One Bay Avenue
Greenwood Inn
Governor Francis Inn
Gregg's
Aidan's
Atwood Grill
The Islander
The Fireside
We don't eat at home much.

A Sunday aunt and a Monday ant
Sunday was a great day with my aunt in CT. On Monday, we decided to go to the Irish festival in Newport. We saw the Shananagans, Finton, Dermot Henry, and more. The Publicans were great. I must find out more about them. On the way home, we stopped at Aidan's in Bristol. I had a delicious mixed grill; Mom ordered a steak sandwich which looked great....except for the ant that crawled out from under the bread. She ended up with a cup of chowder.

Hurricane Frances
We just talked to Jo-Ann and Flo's mother. Jo-Ann is over in St. Petersburg, Flo's family is at home on Merritt Island. I won't bother updating all the stuff on the storm; it's been all over tv. Jo-Ann is going to try to get home tomorrow.
In other news, we went to see Claire today. She looks great, but she's going for an MRI on Tuesday...bad back. I cooked lunch for myself, Mom, Claire and Sr. Madonna. Really.
I want to report on all the restaurants Mom and I are visiting, but not now.

Not a bad day
I picked up Mom at the airport this morning. She left Florida earlier than expected because of the approaching hurricane.
The guy from Elwin's was there when we got home; he examined the tv and delivered good news and bad news. The good news is that it looks like the trouble is the standard trouble with this model, and it's a relatively easy fix. The bad news is that he has to take it to the shop for God knows how long. They pick it up Tuesday. I still have the old tv in the spare bedroom; wish I hadn't sold the other one.

I'm wireless!
After an all day trial and error fix by John at Computers R Us USA on West Shore Road, I'm finally hooked up properly to the Netgear router. I might be wrong, but I don't think he really knew what he did to get it set up, but for 25 bucks, I'm not complaining. It works.
Tomorrow I'm off to Dr. Behar. I'll have to tell Jeanne Anne that I won't be able to have lunch if the tv is going to be delivered. I hope this delivery goes more smoothly than I anticipate.

Another entry basically about food....going to Newport today to have lunch with Steve Bianci. Don't know where, but I do know when...about 11:30. It's a quiet morning here at the traffic command center and on the roads as well.

Charley
I just talked to my mother and sister in Cocoa, FL. Mom went to stay with Jo-Ann for the night. Hurricane Charley slammed into the southwest coast of Florida near Ft. Myers and is heading toward Orlando as I write this. We'll get the remnants of Bonnie tonight and the remnants of Charley on Sunday. Tomorrow's weather should be good; I'm going to a wedding reenactment (I guess that's what you'd call it) at Chello's here in Warwick with Joanie P. then maybe swing by Bruce's. I just realized I left the directions to Bruce's at work. Probably won't be going there. I should have gone to Newport tonight, but I didn't feel like sitting in the rain to see Harry Connick. Besides, Stargate is on!!!

It's only Wednesday
I'm doing reports for Swing FM as well as WSAR and Channel 12 afternoons; it's still not nearly enough.
Just checking the weather....at least one of the tropical storms looks like it will roll through my house in Florida, then make a beeline for the house in RI. It should be an interesting few days. I'm not going to Newport Friday night if the weather is bad; a little rain is one thing, but to sit outside for a Harry Connick concert in a real storm isn't going to happen.

The party's over
I finally had some friends over to the house for a party on Saturday. I had a great time; I hope everyone else did too. Lots of food and drink left over, of course. I'll bring some of it into work. Now I have to find all the stuff like bills that I shoved into bags and into closets. The house does look pretty good right now; I'd love to have people over again next week while it's in good condition, but I'm going to Harry Connick Friday night, and to a party on Saturday.

Different people to annoy
A whole new audience this week. I'm filling in afternoons on WPRO AM, and today I began mornings on WCTK, Cat Country 98.1. It's a huge difference from the days when I reported for 18 stations, but it's a pretty good schedule right now....a little empty, but I can deal with that. I begin SWING FM afternoons next Monday.

Back from the mountains
As usual, my trip to NH had a lot to do with food. Went to the Toasted Lab, David's restaurant, for a delicious rack of lamb on Friday, Caesar salad on Saturday. Great eggs benedict Saturday morning at Guldie's, and a so-so burger at Dairy Queen Saturday night. I remebered those burgers being a lot better.
It was great to see David, and, as a bonus, Chuck, Joannie, Zoe and Lilly, and Jimmy Gray. Lisa is a great bartender, too! Jimmy and I went up the road to the Irish pub (Shannon Door, I think) Saturday night.
Other things of interest for the two or three people reading this....
I travelled up to the summit of Mt. Washington. Cloudy and drizzling at the top, 45 mph winds, but an awesome experience. I wasn't all that comfortable going up and coming back down in the van, but I'm glad I did it. A narrow road, no guardrail, and a driver who talked with her hands.
I took quite a few pictures on the way down...it gave me something to concentrate on.
I also got to see Spider-Man 2 at the mall in North Conway. Great picture. The mall makes the RI mall look awesome. But the factory outlets, I guess, have taken the business.
I came back through Boston; it was a little slow on the lower deck, but well worth the delay. I got to check out the new bridge and the Fleet Center in detail.

Off to the wilderness
I leave this morning for a weekend in NH. Dinner tonight at the Toasted Lab...and the Hinmans will be there too! It's a reunion of sorts with the old WSNE crowd. Let's see, can I get David or Chuck and Joannie to pay for my dinner? Just kidding. This trip will be a little different; last time I took a map along on a road trip, I could read it without glasses!

Never have a turkey dinner for lunch
Delicious lunch at RI Hospital yesterday...and cheap! But I was so sleepy after the turkey dinner; it was a struggle to stay awake at work...and it's usually so easy.
I'm getting ready for my big trip to NH. Two hundred miles is a long way to go for dinner, but I hear the food is awesome. Check out the menu at toastedlab.com

Here's the news from the world of Mike....
I ordered a chair from McKay's. I hope the color and feel of the fabric will be OK.
Started letting people know about my party coming up on August 7. Too late to back out now. Just so I know who I've called....so far, Larry, Karl, Swack, TC, Jim and Jocelyn.

Always remember...
Always remember, McKay's Furniture is closed on Mondays. It was a good afternoon anyway; I returned some stuff to the Christmas Tree shop and had a great meal at Ruby Tuesday's. Try the New Orleans something . It's tilapia with shrimp, alfredo sauce, rice pilaf and broccolli. Very good.
I'm finally paying Grandma Ruth's inventory tax today....outrageous.

Cox
Well, I now have Cox High Speed Internet. There are some issues which need to be resolved though. Firefox won't work, and I can't update the anti virus or spy bot using Cox. Maybe I need to re install them using the new ISP. I'm not sure, so I'll probably end up calling tech support. I'd rather figure it out myself.

Believe it or Not!
I got up at 7:30 this morning and was actually awake! I went for breakfast up at Cozy something on Warwick Ave....eggs benedict. And the waitress recognized me just from my saying "A cup of coffee and a glass of water"! I can't hide.
I'm going to pick up Jim around Noon to continue work on the floor.

Operation
As of 5:00, no word from Mom; I imagine she's sleeping and I don't want to call and wake her up.
I met with the bosses this morning; they know I'd rather work a straight day than a split, but that might mean an extra two hours. Not totally unreasonable, but then I'd be here during the middle of the day with plenty of time to think about how little money they get away with paying and listening to the sales department get richer and richer.

What's been going on
Not much.
I had a great time at Christine and Mike's on Saturday. Never made it to TC's on Sunday.
Heavy rain for the parades on Monday; Bill Crawford and I worked with Dave Richards in Cumberland. Bill and I got wet, but Dave and the others there got soaked. Pretty good parade though in spite of the weather.
No more work yet on the floor.
I just figured out how to change the time of the post!!!!! It's now accurate.

Hail!
We just had the worst hail storm anyone here at work has ever seen. It must have lasted almost 10 minutes here in Providence. Jammed up the traffic, of course. B101 traffic just said it's a little heavy downtown. ?????
Thunderstorms
This morning started with thunderstorms and incredibly incorrect info from Clear Channel. At least commuters won't be bothered by thunderstorms every day.
I'm using Firefox for now; I like it so far.
I took down a lot of tree branches yesterday, left them in the yard when I went to work, tried to get disposal bags, came home and the branches were gone! I'm sure it was Tom and Linda. Thanks. And thanks to Sean for the cutter.

It's July and it's new
The folks from Coast and B101 threw me a nice party last night at Dave and Buster's. Those in attendance were Joannie and Chuck (with Zoe and Lilly), Brian, TC, Rebecca, Steve Mac, Steve Peck, Chris Eagan, and John Pires, the pool shark.

Firefox
Trying out Mozilla Firefox for a while. It's easier to increase the size of the text; I like that. "Farewell" party tonight at Dave and Buster's courtesy of Coast and B101. It's a sad day in many ways.
No work on the floor last night....oh, well.

It's almost over
June is winding down quickly; the change comes on Thursday. More on that when it happens.
Hopefully, there'll be work on the floor tonight. Unfortunately, I forgot the number for the carpet installer, so I'll have to wait till I get home to call them back.
Just for the record, Cassione predicts beautiful weather through Monday...let's see what happens.
Also, check out toastedlab.com It's David's restaurant in North Conway, NH

The weekend
First of all, on Friday, I took the RIPTA ferry to Newport and back. I highly recommend it; 14 bucks round trip and well worth it.
Today is the first meeting of the Association and I've got to get moving if I'm going to make it.

Newport and the floor
The floor is coming along great. Dining room is done, kitchen is next. As of now, no call about carpet installation.
Going to Newport today on the ferry. Leaving Providence at 10:45, pretty much stay on the boat, then right back...arriving back at Point St. at 1:20. In plenty of time for work!

Bill Clinton's book
If you want to buy the Clinton book, go to Overstock.com
It's 18 dollars, plus 1.40 postage, no tax; can't beat a deal like that.
I want to read the book before all the hype dies down (if it ever does).

It's gone
The trash men didn't take the rolled up carpet today, but someone just did....sometime after 8 pm.
Jim had to work late, so no work on the floor tonight. Hopefully tomorrow.

The first of Summer
My living room floor is now down to bare plywood. Ceramic tile is being installed this week in the kitchen/dining room. Carpeting coming later.
I may have a meeting at work tomorrow. It might be interesting.

Wednesday donuts
Enjoying too many Krispy Kreme donuts this morning. Yesterday was hot and humid; today should be hot but drier according to overpaid weathermen. Vic's father passed away; Vic's gone to NJ.

Monday already
I went to Trinity to see The Ruby Sunrise on Friday thanks to Jason from work. Very good!
Nothing much over the weekend.
Accident just now on 95N at the end of the Atwells Ave. onramp!

Carson and Crosby
I finally got the tape of the Tonight Show from 1976. Bing, Ray Bolger, Marvin Hamlicsh, and Burt Mustin. It's the complete show and it's awesome. The same guy is selling a complete show with Benny and Mel Blanc. Yeah, I'm thinking about it.

Mozilla
According to the Screen Savers, there's a big security issue all of a sudden with IE so I thought I'd use Mozilla tonight. Net Zero Hi Speed doesn't seem to work as it's now set up; if I stick with Mozilla, I'll have to see if I can get it to function. Without the high speed, it's awful.

NYC
Time to write about our NYC adventure. On Friday, we went to the USS Intrepid museum; Pretty impressive, but the flight deck was closed for filming of a Nicholas Cage movie. Big dissapointment.
Dinner at the Friars Club, drink at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Saturday, we went to the Today Show, made reservations for the NBC Tour, couldn't get into St. Patrick's, so we went back to the hotel, then uptown for lunch near Carnegie Hall. Back to 30 Rock for the NBC Tour, then up to the Bronx for the Yankees/Texas game. Great seats if you like sitting perched on the side of a building.
We took the subway all the way down to Battery Park, then across on the Statten Island Ferry. Very good ride, and cheap food.
Dinner at Mars 2112. A lot of fun.
A drink at Applebee's, then an interesting walk from 51st back to the hotel at 33rd.
Sunday, a good breakfast in the hotel, then across to Penn Station for the trip home.

Thursday and it's grey
Attended the after auction auction last night. People got great bargains. I bought some gift cerificates...Goffs, Reidy's and Brown U. Theatre.
Today I have to make final preparations for the trip...laundry, of course. Must get batteries for the CD players.
I still have to figure out how to post pics here.

Wednesday afternoon
Ordered carpet from Home Depot today, and did almost everything else I should have. It's kind of a good feeling to get things done.
Tonight's the After auction auction at RIPBS.

Good Weekend
It's been a good few days.
Went to TC's Saturday night for a "Smallville" marathon!
4 episodes and some outtakes...it was a good time.
For some reason, he invited me back for a cook out on Sunday.
Rebecca and Brian were there, along with Tom St. John. Awesome food, a great time.
Today, I have to get train tickets, cancel Blue Cross, then get ready for after auction auction tonight at RIPBS...and, of course, more laundry.

Here's the text of what I said at the Roast for Susan Farmer:
Nice group of folks here tonight....I see a lot of my employees have shown up..you know, state workers, government officials, politicians......
I don't get involved in politics myself, although I used to be quite active. True story, as a kid I handed out literature for Hubert Humphrey in 1968. I did the same for George McGovern in 1972. I supported Walter Mondale....
I haven't picked a winner in 40 years!
I wish I could say I voted for Susan Farmer for Secretary of State or Lt. Governor. I didn't; I'm sorry. I think the only Republican I've ever voted for was Ed DiPrete.
I haven't picked a winner in 40 years!
I kid the former Governor. I don't know if he knows this, but his son-in-law, Michael Hayden has been my doctor for many years. And Dr. Hayden can tell you I'm never anything but complimentary when discussing the DiPretes. Especially when the doctor is holding a sharp object in his hand...or is putting on his rubber glove....
But to the matter at hand.....
Thanks to Susan Farmer, I've been lucky enough to be a part of pledge drives and auctions for the past few years. I like to think that I've become a small part of "Mrs. Farmer's Neighborhood". And in the process, I've gotten to know a little more about her.....
I found out Susan wasn't thrilled replacing the old Channel 36 logo with the new RIPBS seagull. And no wonder. The shade they used for the 36 in the old logo is called "Farmer Green"....absolutely true!
One night at the auction she was telling me about her honeynmoon...or as she called it, "A Lively Experiment".
When I was asked to speak tonight, I declined at first. After all, I'm just a traffic reporter. But I'm also a member of the Friars Club. And what self respecting Friar could pass up such an opportunity?
But even though I've followed Susan Farmer's career, I felt I needed to know more about her, I needed to prepare....so, of course, I went to the Internet.
I GOOGLED Susan Farmer!
And what a treasure trove of information I found. The very first site I went to talked about her early years. For example, she was born in Dry Run, Ohio in November, 1862.
I know....the wrong Susan Farmer. She wasn't born in Ohio.
But I continued on, and found an article written by those two great philosophers, Phillippe and Jorge. And I think they may have said it best....I quote,
"We are sure that Channel 36 would either not exist or be a minor poor sister satellite of Boston's WGBH if it wasn't for Susan Farmer's talent and efforts. She has been an inspirational figure and deserves all the accolades tossed her way. She has always been one of the true class acts".
What more can I say, except that now that there's one less salary over at RIPBS, I'm going to go butter up David Piccerelli, and see if I can get a job.
Thanks, and good night.

It's early on Wednesday
Here's the news....
I had a great piece of scrod last night for dinner; just trying to keep some sort of a record. As lame as it is.
Off to see Dr. Hayden today to make sure I can handle the trip to NYC next week. I don't anticipate any trouble anyway, but might as well get checked out.
It's chilly this morning...only 49 degrees!

Work
It's 5:32; just did Coast 93-3 traffic, waiting for Channel 12. Pretty quiet day in traffic....one accident on 95N before 195, another on 37E at Post Road; both areclear. Home soon for Special K, Match Game and Screen Savers. Exciting.
Back to work
Just woke up from a nap I shouldn't have needed, but I did. Now it's time to go back to work.
The weather today is kinda crappy; we may have thunderstorms soon.
